A Day in the Life of a Working, Busy Mama
From the desk of: Jessica Stevenson
As I am writing this blog I have a few things going on in the background: a 5-month old baby SCREAMING with joy as he has just found his toes for the first time… my husband absolutely BLASTING the audio on his Peloton… the doorbell RINGING because we just moved and new neighbors are coming over to introduce themselves…
Some might find all of this background noise distracting? Frustrating? Exhausting?
For me, this is normal – a day in the life of a working, busy mama.
A colleague recommended that I write about successfully balancing work with being a brand-new mother. When I figure out how to do so successfully, I will let all of you know!
I think this is something most new mom’s face – trying to figure out what “balance” actually looks like. When I think of balance, I always think of a scale… even weight distributed on both sides. But that concept of balance isn’t my reality, nor do I feel is the reality for most mom’s that work (or mom’s that take on the job full-time.)
Being able to evenly distribute my time each day is near on impossible. Balance right now means I have to be okay with giving more of myself to one aspect of my life one day, and then changing it up the next day. The question I answer here shouldn’t be “how do I successfully balance career with being a mom”, but rather “how do I not lose my own identity with all of these new massive life-changes.”
With busy work schedules, screaming babies, new neighbors, and – well – husbands… it is hard to find the time for the most important person – yourself. It doesn’t need to be a big chunk of time, but I have found that doing something for myself everyday keeps me connected to me. Having a long bath, getting my nails done, going grocery shopping, going for a walk… wine… all make me feel a bit more like my normal self – a bit more evenly balanced.
To all the new mom’s out there trying to balance it all – I salute you!
